10 Actors Who Suffered The Most In 2017

There's no question that Brie Larson is one of the most talented actors of her generation, scoring a Best Actress Oscar last year for her fantastic work in Room.

However, as happens with so many Oscar winners, Larson's post-Academy Award career has failed to take advantage of all that momentum, despite her appearing in four movies this year.

First off, Larson played the female lead in Kong: Skull Island, a critically and financially successful movie that was nevertheless harshly criticised for its cardboard characters, most of all Larson's steely photographer, who unfortunately earned more notices for her tight clothing than how interesting she was as a human being. She was effectively eye candy and little else, which was extremely disappointing, especially for an actor of her calibre.

Then Larson appeared in Oscar hopeful The Glass Castle, which was neither critically nor commercially successful, before her directorial debut Unicorn Store earned mixed festival reviews.

And finally, an uproar surged over her latest film, Basmati Blues, a musical which was shot back in 2013 but has only just begun screening around the world. The film has been panned for reinforcing Indian stereotypes while making heavy use of the "white saviour" trope, of which Larson is the focal point.

Though Larson is fairly active on social media, she's kept fairly quiet about this one, presumably hoping the PR mess would blow over quickly (which, honestly, it did). At least the movie's low-key distribution means barely anyone will ever actually see it.

Things are certainly looking up for her future, though, with Larson shooting Captain Marvel and a role in Avengers 4 next year. 2017 looks like it was probably just an off-year: she'll be fine.
