1. Johnny Depp Didn't See The Point Of Resurrecting His Career With The Grand Budapest Hotel
Ralph Fiennes is, no question, perfect for Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel. Tapping into a comedic side of himself hitherto unseen, Fiennes ditches the sinister, adopts a camp, affected manner and dons moustache and wig to play what is surely one of Anderson's finest creations: Gustave H, concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel. The role, however, almost sounds like it was made fit for Johnny Depp, and while we don't know how seriously Depp considered the part, he was the actor that became attached to the film first as lead, before any other casting decisions were announced. So while Fiennes is excellent as Monsieur Gustave, it's easy to imagine Depp fitting into an Anderson film and that part in particular like a glove. And oh what a thought it is, that Depp could leave behind journeyman directors (that includes Tim Burton now, regrettably) and get to grips with a real auteur, someone who could push him to do dangerous things in front of the camera like he used to do. Maybe some acclaimed director will still come along and get Depp being an exciting presence again, but - especially considering the final product - The Grand Budapest Hotel now seems like a huge missed opportunity that could've got the actor back on track. Would you have liked to have seen any of these actors appear? Or was it a good thing they turned the movies down? Share your thoughts in the comments.
