10 Actors Who Turned Down Roles In MCU Movies

3. Mel Gibson- Thor

Joaquin Phoenix Dr Strange

The rejected role: Thor's father, Loki's adoptive father, and the Allfather, Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins.

What happened?: While Mel Gibson was once one of Hollywood's most beloved leading men, he's had a pretty substantial fall from grace after saying some rather nasty things and having several problems with the law. It's surprising then that family-friendly MCU was apparently eager to have him join their team as the all-powerful king of Asgard. As Gibson explains in great detail:

“Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.”

For better or worse?: Hopkins certainly brought a lot of gravitas and class to the role of Odin, but it's impossible not to have wished we could have seen Gibson in the role. He's shown in Hamlet he can handle the Shakespearean-esque dialogue, and of course Braveheart proved he can pull off the conquering hero role, if not a Scottish accent. And it would have been fitting for Chris Hemsworth's Thor to have an Aussie father. What a shame.
