10 Actors Who Won Oscars For The Wrong Movie
2. Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant
Honestly, Leonardo DiCaprio deserved an Oscar win for anything other than The Revenant. Sure, it's beautifully directed and epic in both scale and story, and DiCaprio put an awful lot of work into it.
But, given the fact that he didn't even give the best performance in the movie (that honour goes to a career-best Tom Hardy), and that he barely speaks for nearly three hours, his win was without question a perfect example of Academy pity.
Before The Revenant, DiCaprio was the face of a number of memes about his lack of Oscar glory, having been nominated four times before he finally won.
But his previous nominations were all much more worthy of the award than the role he eventually won for. What's Eating Gilbert Grape was an early exploration of his mature and powerful acting style, and his role in Blood Diamond (arguably and tragically the least remembered of his Oscar-nominated roles) remains a career best.
He was slated to win for Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street, which saw him portray Jordan Belfort with complete conviction and an endless amount of energy, but he was beat at the post by Matthew McConaughey.
All told, The Revenant is two and a bit hours of Leo grunting in the wilderness, hunting for the Oscar that had long eluded him with overlong sequences of feigned pain and a croaky voice.
