10 Actors Who Won Oscars For The Wrong Movie

1. Al Pacino - Scent Of A Woman

Denzel Washington
Universal Pictures

In all of Academy history, no Oscar win has ever been so clearly a case of pity. Al Pacino is a monumental figure in pop culture, a Hollywood icon often seen as one of the greatest actors of all time. From The Godfather and its sequels, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat, Serpico, Donnie Brasco, The Devil's Advocate and so, so many more, there is a reason he has such a reputation.

But amongst his many credits and his seven nominations, he has only ever won one Academy Award, and the fact that it wasn't for any of the aforementioned classics is insane.

Be honest: What does anyone remember about Scent of A Woman? Nothing. That's right. One of the most forgettable dramas of the '90s, and all anyone is likely to tell you about it is Pacino saying "Hoo-ha" for a dismal two and a half hours. Oh, and Chris O'Donnell is there, because it was 1992 and he was still around.

Pacino is by no means bad as Frank Slade, but he does lean into his more peculiar and loud habits throughout the film's runtime, and given the fact that he lost for The Godfather and The Godfather Part II makes his win for the role even more nonsensical, and a clear case of the Academy realising they'd made a mistake with his earlier career going unrewarded.
