10 Actors With Upcoming Projects That Could Make Or Break Their Careers

The Project

An upcoming project that combines Dwayne 'The Rock'' Johnson's undoubted Star power and the directorial expertise of Forrest Gump's Robert Zemeckis to bring us The King.

The story is focussing on King Kamehameha and his quest to fulfil his life-long prophecy of uniting all of the Hawaiian islands, to give the islanders leverage in the advancement of their culture involving trade with the Europeans. It smells of a passion project for producer Johnson but with Pearl Harbour and Braveheart writer penning the screenplay, this could be something special.

Why It's Make Or Break

The Rock is the world's biggest box office attraction that isn't under the MCU umbrella. He can sell a movie, whether he fights alongside a giant, white gorilla (Rampage) or has decided to slap Kevin Hart around for 90 minutes (Central Intelligence and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). So how could one movie break this Goliath's career?

The theme here is that of an action/comedy megastar who can't seem to miss but his dramatic outlay doesn't make for great reading. It's unknown territory for him as his last straight drama came out 13 years ago (!) and 2006's Gridiron Gang, though not an awful movie does perhaps suggest that he's stayed away from the genre for a reason.

His HBO series Ballers definitely proves he has the chops but its whether he's finally earned the trust of the casual cinema audience and critics enough to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor. He'll always be able to kick ass and crack wise but this next move could define The Rock as acting royalty or just another action hero not cut out for the Academy.
