5. Annette Bening
Famously losing to Hilary Swank on two occasions out of her four nominations, Annette Bening has been left out of the awards picture for a decade but continues to be one of the most consistent performers in Hollywood.
Her four nominations come from her supporting work in The Grifters and her leading performances in American Beauty, Being Julia, and The Kids Are Alright. Losing to Swank is unfortunate because the two films that went up against her (American Beauty and Being Julia) are easily Bening's best work and would have both saw wins for the actress in any other year.
Recently, Bening has been looked over in favour of other performances, all while she is still giving awards worthy work in the likes of 20th Century Women, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool and The Report. With a storied career spanning decades, Bening is still showing that she can act circles around her co-stars, unfortunately the Academy is yet to agree to the point they award her with a statuette.
