7. The Longest Yard
The Longest Yard is a remake of the classic from the 70s starring Burt Reynolds, who also makes an appearance here, with a new tonal shift that cranked up to 11 on crude humor. Sandler plays a washed up Quarterback who finds himself in prison after receiving a DUI and getting in a high speed police chase. The premise of the film is built on a profitable football game between guards and inmates. Despite being hilariously absurd (inmates sneaking in McDonalds, Chris Rock as a caretaker, cross-dressing cheerleaders, an inmate desperately seeking some worth to the team but falling at every hurdle, and more) theres also an unexpected dark tone in some of the humor. I certainly never expected an Adam Sandler movie where we see Stone Cold Steve Austin call Nelly the N word or major character deaths. The Longest Yard can be pretty damn juvenile at times but its balanced well with a decent story for an Adam Sandler comedy, and the laughs are as genuine as the triumphant chest-beating that the climactic game evokes.
