6. Beneath
Actually made back in 2013, Beneath spent a couple of years playing at festivals across the world and this year, it arrived straight to DVD in the UK courtesy of Arrow Films. The film shares its name with another 2013 horror film and, as such, has been somewhat overshadowed. It's a shame that so few people have seen or even heard of Beneath, because it's a genuinely impressive claustrophobia horror. Directed by Ben Ketai, best known for the 30 Days of Night sequels, the film follows a group of miners who become trapped underground. The twist is that one of the more experienced miners is on his last day ever down in the pit and he has brought his daughter along for the ride. As the crew battle to stay alive, they begin to turn on each other in a manner that is strongly implied to be supernatural. Beneath has a well-worn premise that will be familiar to those who have seen the likes of The Descent and As Above, So Below, but Ketai brings a certain amount of visual invention to it all. There are plenty of chills to the film and the ambiguity of the story is nicely managed, making this an under-seen horror treat.
