7. Insidious Chapter 3

The Insidious franchise has been a major hit for Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions since the original film became a box office and critical hit in 2011. With James Wan, director of the first two installments in the series, busy working on Fast & Furious 7, his regular collaborator Leigh Whannell stepped into the director's chair for his feature debut. The result, which elevated regular supporting star Lin Shaye to lead performer, turns out to be the best film in the otherwise unremarkable franchise. Shaye's medium is coaxed into trying to communicate with the spirit of a teenage girl's deceased mother. Needless to say, the spirit that ultimately comes into their home is something altogether more malevolent. Shaye proves to be a competent protagonist and more than capable of holding up the narrative on her own. Whannell also showcases an aptitude behind the camera, conjuring up some impressive scares and subverting expectations nicely. The Insidious franchise has always worked best when watched in a group, so it's definitely worth grabbing the DVD for a quiet night of Halloween fun with a bowl of popcorn.
