The Ending We Got

At the end of the heavily hyped (and just about good) Bird Box, Sandra Bullock's Malorie, her son and her daughter all make it to the sanctuary they're told is a safe haven down the river.

They find that the sanctuary - which was a blind school - and are met by hundreds of people with no blindfolds including Malorie's doctor Dr Lapham. It's very much a hopeful note, which is reinforced as Malorie gives her previously unnamed children names.

The Ending We Almost Saw

Had the film stuck closer to the book, it would have been considerably less hopeful. At the end of Josh Malerman's novel, Malorie and her children get to the sanctuary, but then find that everyone there is still blindfolded apart from those who have chosen to intentionally blind themselves and their children to survive.

Director Susanne Bier spoke to Polygon to explain why she changed the ending:

"The movie is slightly more positive. The movie is, in many aspects, different from the book, but it's also very rooted in the book. The book also has a kind of positive ending and I would not have wanted to do an apocalyptic movie that didn't have a hopeful ending.
"In a way, pretty much everything I've done has had some sort of a hopeful ending. I'm not particularly interested for the audience to leave, from the cinema or their own screen, with a kind of completely bleak point of view. That's not really what I believe in."
