10 Alternative Best Picture Oscar Film Winners Of The Last Decade

9. 2013: The Wolf Of Wall Street

A difficult call as the Academy rightly bestowed Best Picture upon 2013's phenomenal outing 12 Years A Slave.

However, the alternate winner for this year ticked every single entertainment oriented box on the opposite side of the dramatic spectrum. While 12 Years A Slave received acclaim for its unflinching depiction of the horrors of slavery, this debauched classic broke records for profanity and featured some of the most outrageous, deliciously depraved scenes ever seen in a motion picture.

Avid film fans will surely know by now that I am referring to Martin Scorsese's debauched masterpiece, The Wolf of Wall Street.

When one considers Leonardo DiCaprio, the best actor of his generation, won the Oscar for Best Actor for a role in which he spends much of his screen time wordlessly traversing the wilds of the Dakotas, the fact he didn't win for his maniacal portrayal of outrageous party animal and stockbroker Jordan Belfort is enough to make film buffs scream in bitter frustration at the Academy.

The Wolf of Wall Street features all the staples that have made Martin Scorsese one of the most legendary directors to ever take the chair. A flawless script, unforgettable set pieces in the style of Scorsese's trademark iconic cinematography and thunderously good performances from a star studded cast mean that The Wolf Of Wall Street's only sin is poor timing. It remains one of the best films ever made, with the misfortune of coming up against another titanically good picture at the height of awards season.
