Let me just get this out of the way; the 2014 winner for Best Picture, Birdman, is a superb film.

Michael Keaton's lead performance and the inimitable style in which it is shot make this an absolute gem of a viewing experience. However, to say it did not deserve to win the coveted Oscar for Best Picture in 2014 would be a understatement of criminal proportions.

Simply put, Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel is a once in a generation masterpiece. Featuring an ensemble cast that would make Don't Look Up blush and shot in Anderson's unmistakeable trademark style to effortlessly create a gorgeously contained world, it is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest films of the 21st century.

The Grand Budapest Hotel's whimsical, yet totally engrossing story combines heart warming moments with haunting beautiful moments of introspection. It even manages to cram enough laughs in to make even the most solemn of filmgoers chuckle and has resulted in cult status for a picture that resonates beyond the famously die hard Anderson fan base.

The fact that this film is basically one big caricature of various genres and still manages to enchant audiences from every conceivable demographic says it all. A breathtaking exhibition of Anderson surpassing his already critically acclaimed and unique style of directing means The Grand Budapest Hotel will always rank highly amongst the most unforgivable omissions from the Best Picture winner list.
