Moonlight took home the accolade of Best Picture in 2016. The coming of age drama saw Mahershala Ali become the first Muslim actor to take home an acting Oscar, bringing into sharp focus the famous alleged lack of diversity at the heart of the Academy.

Moonlight deserves a significant chunk of the plaudits bestowed upon it, but the fact remains that it wasn't even the best film of the year.

In reality, that distinction belongs to Mel Gibson's sole directorial project of 2016. Hacksaw Ridge is a literal bloody masterpiece, starring 2022 Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield as conscientious objector Desmond Doss in a story encompassing his simple roots falling in love in Virginia all the way to his superhuman exploits during WWII.

Doss single handedly dragged 75 men to safety without firing a weapon in the midst of the hellish conflict on Okinawa and Gibson's picture brings this epic story from the appalling Japanese war theatre, highlighting the concept of war as hell, to life in gloriously horrific detail.

Garfield, one of the most flexible, talented actors of the 21st century is absolutely sublime as Doss, effortlessly combining his soft spoken character with some of the most unbelievably heroic acts ever witnessed in war films. Throwing in a hilarious star turn by Vince Vaughn as Doss' gruff sergeant and Hacksaw Ridge earns the undeserved and unwanted distinction of yet another film that the Academy failed to do justice to.
