In 2015, Spotlight deservedly won the Oscar for Best Picture, following a graphically unsettling dive into the investigation of the widespread systemic abuse of children by vile paedophilic priests within the Boston based arm of the Catholic Church.

While it was a worthy winner, it speaks volumes that nobody would have been shocked to see The Big Short triumph in the Best Picture sweepstakes that year.

A film about the financial crisis that resulted from the US housing bubble? People who have not seen it could be forgiven for thinking that this film is about as exciting as watching paint dry. I implore you, give your skepticism a break and give the film a chance.

With an ensemble cast featuring Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell and Brad Pitt (all of whom are stars worthy of top billing in their own right) providing blockbuster performances from the get go, The Big Short is an absolute triumph of a motion picture. Providing a scathing, yet often utterly hilarious commentary on the corrupt buffoons who initiated the crisis, the film invokes big picture consideration through a captivating, effortlessly entertaining script and performances.

Spotlight, and the vitally important message it carries, made it a worthy 2015 winner. However, were we living in a parallel universe that does not feature the heinous betrayals of trust that despicably nauseating Catholic priests are liable to, it is hard to envision a scenario where The Big Short would not have taken film making's ultimate accolade home.
