10. Transmetropolitan
Plot: Warren Ellis' cyber-punk comic charts the trials and tribulations of Spider Jerusalem, an infamous gonzo journalist. Spider dedicates his life to fighting corruption and abuses of power from the many decadent and evil inhabitants of The City; a twisted metropolis of rampant consumerism, sex, drugs and violence as he strives to stop the world becoming even more dystopian than it already is. The Pitch: Fear & Loathing in the 23rd Century. Why It Would Make A Killer Movie: In a word; Spider. The protagonist in Transmetropolitan is unlike any other comic book character seen in film before. Paying homage to Hunter S. Thompson, Spider Jerusalem is a sarcastic, drug-addicted, foul-mouthed, troubled and bitter man who also happens to be a brilliant journalist with a deep hatred of authority, political corruption and, err, dogs. Never without his trusty bowel disruptor (it does what it says on the tin) and his 'filthy assistants', Spider takes the fight to The Man, helping him rank as the 12th Greatest Comic Book Character of All Time by Empire Magazine. Transmetropolitan is set in a fully realised world of the future that is scarily familiar but incredibly funny at the same time. This dystopian vision of the future is one reason why no film has yet to be made (Ellis has stated production costs would be too great) but with creator Ellis indicating he would like Tim Roth to play the character of Spider Jerusalem, film goers and comic book aficionados can but dream we'll get to see this on the big screen one day.
