10 Alternative Films That Show The Real High School

1. Heathers

New World PicturesNew World PicturesOh Heathers. Straddling the lines between horror and comedy so flawlessly that your moral compass may as well have had an adventure in the microwave, Heathers is the perfect antithesis to the traditional €˜80s teen movie. We follow Veronica, a smart girl who€™s somehow wangled her way into the popular crowd (all of whom are called Heather), but hates every second of it. Handsome new kid, J.D., sees through her pain and they begin a relationship after one of the Heathers vows revenge on Veronica for embarrassing her at a party. So J.D. poisons her with a cup of bleach. No, seriously. Our murderous teens make it look like a suicide, because obviously, and #1 b*tch Heather becomes a beacon for troubled youth in the community. It€™s difficult to know how one falls into a domino effect of murdering people, but Veronica finds herself in it. After killing Heather, she and J.D. plan a prank on two jocks who had spread a rumour about her. This is where we discover that Veronica is a bit dim and J.D. is insane. The prank involves shooting two jock bullies with fake guns, except the guns aren€™t fake. J.D. kills both of the boys and plants €œgay€ items around the bodies (mineral water and a photo of Joan Crawford, since you asked) to make it look like they were having a secret affair. This also backfires, and the boys become martyrs against homophobia. Unfortunately for the school, this string of bad luck doesn€™t hinder J.D. The fake suicides trigger a spate of real suicide attempts (peer pressure is a dangerous thing!), each sillier than the crimes that caused them, so J.D.€™s answer is to blow up the school. If Elephant laid bare the stark adult horror of high school mass murder, then Heathers revels in its immaturity. J.D. and Veronica have a stand-off in the boiler room, ending in J.D. being shot. Outside of the school he still detonates the bomb, but rather than killing everyone it merely lights Veronica€™s cigarette (smoking is a cooler trend than suicide after all). Veronica triumphantly takes a drag, and usurps another Heather to be the school€™s new benevolent Queen Bee.

Fan of Taylor Swift and the Dead Kennedys (a duet I can only dream of). I like dystopias, slasher films, and video games that make me feel things.
