Why do some great films fail to find an audience at the cinema? It's troubling that films like the criminally underrated Zodiac didn't even make $85 million worldwide and films like Fight Club, that resonate with an entire generation, barely broke $100 million worldwide at the box office. Both those films are of course directed by David Fincher whose next feature Gone Girl, based on an acclaimed novel of the same name, is released in October. Gone Girl features Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, a journalist of note who has fallen on hard times who relocates with his wife (Rosamund Pike) to a small Midwestern town from New York City. Using the last of her trust fund he sets up a bar but when his wife goes missing he becomes the prime suspect. The novel is famous for its unreliable narratives, plot twists and suspense so here's hoping that if David Fincher can translate all that to the screen with his usual panache we could have one the best thrillers of the year on our hands and one that finds the audience it deserves. Gone Girl's story may promise much second guessing regarding 'whodunnit' but if you like to know what to expect before you step foot into the cinema then maybe the latest Paranormal Activity is for you. Also released in October is the fifth instalment to the franchise and it's directed by Gregory Plotkin who was the editor of the previous four films. Incidentally the previous four instalments of the franchise have grossed over $700 million worldwide. The mind boggles.
