10 Alternative Must See Films Of 2014

2. The Imitation Game

Next up for your consideration is The Imitation Game released in November which is based on a script which topped the annual Hollywood Blacklist in 2011 and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong and Charles Dance. It tells the true but tragic story of wartime cryptographer Alan Turing who cracked the Nazi's Enigma code during World War II. The focus of the story will not only be on Turing's real life heroism in helping the allies win World War II but also his criminal prosecution for his discovered homosexuality and the barbarism he suffered at the hands of the British justice system who chemically castrated him. On paper this has everything to be a real Oscar contender but the biggest ace up its sleeve is director Morten Tyldum who is making his first film since Headhunters, the Norwegian action thriller, which was one of the best films and biggest surprises of 2008. If you fancy a more visceral war experience with less castration then you could check out Fury also released in November. It stars Brad Pitt as sergeant Wardaddy (seriously) leading Michael Pena, Shia LeBeouf, Logan Lerman and Jon Bernthal as a five man Sherman Tank crew behind enemy lines on a deadly mission. Rumours of a scene featuring Brad Pitt beating Shia LeBeouf to death with his bare hands while shouting 'I'm the Wardaddy' have proved to be false.
