Ever since The Matrix received its 2008 Blu-ray re-release, audiences have effectively been made to watch a version of the film that many fans consider inferior to both the original theatrical release and earlier DVD releases.

The problem, inherently, was that the film had its colours re-graded for the 2008 Blu-ray to be more stylistically consistent with its two original sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

You probably remember that the scenes set inside the Matrix in those movies have a distinct green tint to them, which differentiates them from the more washed-out scenes in Zion.

The original release of the first film utilised a far more subtle and subdued green tint within the Matrix, and so many fans felt that this new colour grade was excessive and strayed too far from the original aesthetic.

This green-tinted version was widely used by streaming services for many years, and it wasn't until the 2018 4K re-release that the original grade was restored, as overseen by the trilogy's cinematographer Bill Pope.

This is one of those subtle alternate version that many casual moviegoers would never even think about, but once it's been pointed out to you and you've seen how much more vibrant the original version looks, it's impossible to un-see.
