5. Catherine Keener
Whereas George Clooney - who's only two years younger than Catherine Keener - enjoys all the adulation, fame and spoils of a young Roman emperor, it's comparative hell out there for older actresses. It's not so strange to see male actors continue to dominate screens into their 50s, as Clooney, Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage (yes, even him) well know, but an actress over 35 will have her work cut out getting even supporting roles in Hollywood. This includes an actress of Catherine Keener's calibre. Keener, a favourite of such indie luminaries as Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, is almost like another Diane Keaton, an actress of such easygoing charm that she flits comfortably between drama and comedy (someone who can seamlessly go from The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Capote has something special). But the best Keener's been given in this decade hasn't been very good at all; Percy Jackson? Bad Grandpa? Peace, Love & Misunderstanding? Most tragic is the role the actress was handed in the only great film she's starred in over the last few years: a literal five-minute appearance as Tom Hanks's wife in Captain Philips.
