10 Amazing Character Moments In The Matrix Trilogy
1. Agent Smith - The Morpheus Interrogation Scene
After the bloody second act of The Matrix, all seems lost as half the crew on board the Nebuchadnezzar have perished, Morpheus has been captured by the Agents, and Neo is still without answers or purpose.
In a last ditch effort, Neo and Trinity launch an assault to save Morpheus, but on the build up to the showdown, audiences are treated to a quiet but very tense one-to-one between Morpheus and the antagonist Agent Smith.
It's in this interrogation that the sinister mask of Agent Smith slips away and the true motivation of the villain is unveiled. It's established early on in the film that the Agents are emotionless, omniscient programs with very clear and concrete agendas. But when Smith orders the other Agents to leave him alone with Morpheus, Smith removes his earpiece and confides in Morpheus - and audiences learn he is an anomaly.
Audiences learn in this scene how unique Smith is compared to the other Agents; he's desperate, determined, fearful and vindictive. And he recognises his obsolescence should he complete his mission. Hugo Weaving's performance as Smith is one of the most memorable parts of The Matrix Trilogy, and I stand by this scene in particular as being one of the biggest and best examples of just how great a role he played.
