10 Amazing Movie Monologues
9. Dead Poets Society - Seize The Day
This scene is one that is as motivational as it is heartwarming, and yet in the same breath it manages to be bone chilling. Robin Williams evokes every emotion out of his students and the viewers, in a way that very few people are able to.
Carpe diem, Latin for seize the day, is a mantra that is meant for living your best life. Williams gives his students a speech that starts off being terrifying and ends up being uplifting. He gathers his students around a trophy case full of centuries old students, who have all passed away.
"Each and every one of us in this room will one day stop breathing, turn cold, and die." This is how the monologue begins, and it transform into a sweeping urge to seize each and every day, and make every moment count as the clock is already ticking for all of us.
In a world where many of us are just trying to get through the day, this scene and these words are there to remind us to make every day count, because as scary as it is to think about, inevitably we will run out of days. "Make your life extraordinary."
