10 Amazing Movie Monologues

8. The Great Dictator - Final Speech

Fight Club Tyler Durden Brad Pitt
United Artists

The Great Dictator released eighty years ago, in the ancient year of 1940, and yet perhaps this speech is more poignant than ever before.

Charlie Chaplin is one of the most famous actors of all time, and he is synonymous with silent films. That is why this movie, and ultimately his final speech within it was so shocking, and still holds it own nearly a century later.

This speech given is about how humans are good more than they are evil. "We want to live by each others happiness, not each others misery." That line is the central theme of the entire four minute speech. Chaplin goes on to talk about how greed has corrupted selfish men, and how without greed the world would be at peace.

This speech had a completely different intention in 1940 than it does today, and yet it is completely relatable to all of the turmoil that is happening currently. It feels as if Chaplin is looking through the screen, eighty years into the future, and talking directly to our generation.

Chaplin is without a doubt the most famous and talented silent film star, and after The Great Dictator he cemented himself as one of the greatest actors of all time. "Let us all unite!"
