The name 'David Fincher' has become synonymous with cinephiles for many reasons over the years.

That said, one of the director's greatest hits came in 1997. Although it doesn't grab the same headlines that the likes of Fight Club, Se7en, and The Social Network do, The Game is indubitably some of his finest work on the big screen.

Headlined by Hollywood heavyweight Michael Douglas, as well as featuring the aforementioned Sean Penn, The Game is a mind-bending movie that manipulates the viewer time and time again to avoid detection, thus making for one truly terrifying and unforgettable ride.

Douglas' rather cold-hearted and cynical character, Nicholas Van Orton, finds himself trapped in a game of life and death as he battles to maintain his sanity as the lines are blurred between what's scripted as part of the game and what isn't, which leads to a tense final act.

After mistakenly shooting his brother Conrad on the roof of the soon-to-be-discovered celebration of his birthday, it isn't until Nicholas' suicide attempt is thwarted that he discovers that all the events that preceded his leap of faith were a rouse.

Upon completing 'the game', Nicholas can reflect and realise that he needs to become a better person, and it would only take multiple near-death experiences to do so... happy birthday!
