10 Amazing Movie Plot Twists That Never Get Talked About
3. Take Shelter - Curtis Was Right
Michael Shannon has more often than not been deployed in a supporting role, but 2011's Take Shelter sees him take the spotlight, and deservedly so.
Burdened and plagued by horrifying 'dreams' of an impending, apocalyptic-level storm, Shannon's Curtis struggles to determine fact from fiction whilst caring for his hearing-impaired daughter alongside Jessica Chastain's Samantha. However, what begins to dawn on Curtis as the film progresses is that his mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in her mid-30s, the same age bracket he starts experiencing these perceived delusions and hallucinations.
Take Shelter is a haunting and heartbreaking watch, as the viewer is helpless to watch this man struggle with the real possibility that he may follow the same path as his mother, as his professional and personal lives begin to crack and subsequently disintegrate as his 'visions' become increasingly dark, deadly and disastrous.
Although a storm does come, and Curtis and his family make haste for his storm shelter, it is revealed to be mild as they resurface to see broken branches being swept up by their unfazed neighbours. Director Jeff Nichols' implementation of the 'twist' is genius, albeit ambiguous.
We expect that Curtis has suffered the same inevitable fate as his mother, but, in the film's final moments, both Samantha and their daughter see the same storm Curtis has been foreboding, accompanied by tornadoes and heavy, motor-oil-like raindrops. Is it real? Is it a dream? It's ultimately at your discretion, but we're going to go for the former in this case.
