South Korea has established itself as a cinematic powerhouse for quite some time now.  Whether that be sweeping the Oscars on the big screen through Bong Joon-ho's Parasite or the Emmys via Hwang Dong-hyuk's Squid Game on the small, the country is directly responsible for the creation of a whole host of imaginative and unique storytelling in both formats.

With that in mind, Kim Jee-woon's A Tale of Two Sisters is no exception by any means. What follows is a tremendous yet terrifying ghost tale intertwined with complex themes such as mental illness and family dynamics.

Recently released from her institutionalisation, Su-mi is reunited with her sister, Su-yeon, as well as her passive father and seemingly cold and cruel stepmother under the same roof. Yet, the truth about Su-yeon and her role in the story is a genius ploy that brings the film full circle.

On that note, it is ultimately revealed that Su-mi suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID) and has acted as both her deceased sister and supposedly evil stepmother for large portions of the film before she is reinstitutionalised.

There are a few seeds that are planted throughout the film's nearly two-hour runtime that hint toward the shocking plot twist, especially given the power of hindsight in that Su-yeon is only seen interacting with Su-mi after her sister's release. Director Kim Jee-woon generates the perfect balance of grisly horror and familiar drama, crafting a true South Korean hidden gem.
