10 Amazing Movie Practical Effects And How They Did It

4. Bladerunner 2049 - Los Angeles Of The Future

Many of us groaned when Bladerunner 2049 was announced. It seemed impossible that a different director would be able to capture the atmosphere, the mood and the soul of the original nearly thirty years later. Audiences and critics alike were pleasantly surprised when Denis Villeneuve not only perfectly captured the spirit of the original, but delivered a sequel worthy of being a successor to such an iconic movie.

In order to capture the spirit of the original, Denis Villeneuve made the decision to rely on miniatures and practical effects wherever possible just as the original did. Wide panning shots of the city skyline were sometimes crafted via CGI in order to fill the background as a matte painting may have done. But any closeups of the colossal buildings of future Los Angeles were real models shot up close to add authenticity.

By using real models in the longer panning shots, it allows the viewer to remain immersed in the experience of approaching a real object, maintaining the atmosphere and authenticity of the original.
