6. Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian
Kevin Smith, writer/director/stoner of foul-mouthed indie comedies like Clerks and Chasing Amy, once got approached by some big wig execs asking if he was interested in one of two projects: the first of which we'll get to in a little while, and the second of which was a sequel to Tim Burton's cult horror comedy Beetlejuice. Smith's witty retort (which we're not sure he actually said at the time but whatever) was "didn't we say everything we needed to with the first Beetlejuice?" and promptly took the second offer, but he was wrong to do that. It was just one of many mistakes he made in his career. No, we did not say everything with the first Beetlejuice. Because we never got to see him surfing. The original movie told the story of a deceased couple played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who team up with new occupant Winona Ryder to haunt her obnoxious parents and force them to leave the house. They enlist the help of Michael Keaton's eccentric spirit Beetlejuice, who ends up being more trouble than he's worth. Nifty dancer, mind. It's a lot of fun. It was also a huge financial and critical success, grossing $73.7 million worldwide, so obviously the studio started talking about a sequel - something which Burton couldn't care less about. As a joke he suggested the title "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" and somehow that script got written. "Tim thought it would be funny to match the surfing backdrop of a beach movie with some sort of German Expressionism, because they're totally wrong together," remembers Jonathan Gems, the man hired to pen said script. To be honest, we have to agree with him, because that does sound hilarious and super weird. The former of which Burton could do with his films. Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian was in development for a good long while before it ultimately died, and whilst everyone involved has all but been confirmed for a new sequel a couple of decades after the fact, from the sounds of it they'll be using a new screenplay and premise. Shame.
