10 Amazing Movies That Didn't Receive An Oscar Nomination

10. The Night Of The Hunter

The Film: Despite being a thesp of Shakespearean credentials, Charles Laughton's choice of directorial debut - an adaptation of Davis Grubb's Southern Gothic cracker, The Night Of The Hunter - turned out to be a surprisingly brutal and chilling affair.

Headed up by one of cinema's most bravura performances in Bob Mitchum's turn as evangelical, deranged crim, Reverend Harry Powell, the film's themes of good, evil and childhood fear remain resonant today. Oh, and it has a belting finale.

It's a shame, then, that Laughton's movie was not a feature at the 28th Academy Awards, where Marty took home a portion of the plaudits and the film was left lurking in the shadows.

What Nominations It Should Have Received: Best Director (Laughton), Best Actor (Mitchum), Best Cinematography (Stanley Cortez), Best Supporting Actress (Shelley Winters).
