10 Amazing Movies That Didn't Receive An Oscar Nomination

9. Nil By Mouth

The Film: In all honesty, once the nominations for the 70th Academy Awards were announced in 1998, not many held hope that Gary Oldman's searing debut would stand a chance of receiving a nod. But that's not to say it didn't deserve one.

Swept away by Titanic's dominance, as well as the likes of LA Confidential, As Good as It Gets and Good Will Hunting, this was a year when academy voters were lapping up homegrown box office smashes and not looking to an armpit in East London for consideration. Their loss, as in Nil By Mouth we had one of the best British films in years, a film so close to the knuckle that it draws blood.

From Ray Winstone's rambling, volatile performance and Kathy Burke's fragile turn, all the way to Oldman's expert lensing of his old haunts as a lad, the film is a raving beast, one that captures a couple caught in a maelstrom of abuse and violence. Too brutal for the Oscars by a long stretch.

What Nominations It Should Have Received: Best Original Screenplay (Oldman) and Best Actor (Winstone).
