10 Amazing Movies That Didn't Receive An Oscar Nomination

8. Clerks

The Film: Beneath the swearing and jizz mopping, Clerks boasts an Oscar-worthy tale of how it got from script to screen. It's a story frequently told - debut director Kevin Smith maxed out eight credit cards and flogged his comic collection to meet the film's $27,000 budget - but what perhaps gets overlooked is just how wrong the Academy got it not recognising this indie masterwork.

Smith's Cannes crowd pleaser went on to be an absolute no show on the nominations roster for the 66th Academy Awards, with Forest Gump ruling the roost, but time has been kind to his slacker classic, and the adventures of retail warriors Dante and Randall continue to crop up in numerous 'funniest movie ever' polls. This is a film, remember, that was so hot the snow at Sundance nearly melted and the folks at Cannes couldn't get enough of. .

Overall, this is yet more proof that Oscar doesn't get comedy, but more on that next.

What Nominations It Should Have Received: Best Original Screenplay (Smith) and Best Original Song (Soul Asylum - 'Can't Even Tell').
