10 Amazing Movies Under 90 Minutes Long

9. Zombieland

Toy Story
Sony Pictures

Runtime: 88 minutes

Horror-comedies are hard to get right, because there's a great risk that both those elements won't be balanced properly. How do you scare people in one scene and make them laugh in the next?

Fortunately, Zombieland has the answer: you don't.

Instead, you do both those things in the same scene, creating scenarios that can provide big scares as well as raucous belly laughs. Ruben Fleischer's 2009 effort is packed full of moments like this, from Bill Murray's death to a zombie attacking a man on the toilet, meaning that copious amounts of gore and humour are layered throughout.

This is probably why the movie feels quite brisk, too. There are kills or jokes every couple of seconds and it packs so much goodness into each scene that there really isn't a dull moment. Before Zombieland, many had declared the zombie sub-genre dead, but this was the flick that gave it a shot in the arm.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
