9. The Monitor

In between her role as Lisbeth Salander in the big screen adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series and starring in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus, Noomi Rapace managed to fit in a little Norwegian chiller called The Monitor. And we’re rather glad that she did.

Directed by Pal Sletaune, who once famously turned down the opportunity to direct American Beauty, the film stars Rapace as an anxious, overprotective young mother who’s relocated to a depressing block of flats with her eight-year-old son to escape her abusive ex-husband.

Paranoid that he’ll find them she installs a baby monitor in her son’s room which starts to pick up some pretty frightening frequencies coming from elsewhere in their building.

Though it doesn’t really tread any new ground, it’s nonetheless a chilling meditation on motherhood that will appeal to fans of films like Dark Water or Christopher Smith’s Triangle.
