Imagine Rosemary’s Baby transplanted to 21st century Denmark via David Lynch and you’ll get a pretty good idea of the horror that’s about to unfold in Shelley. Directed by Iran-born filmmaker Ali Abbasi, the movie premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival last year where it was nominated for Best First Feature and is a more than worthy addition to the ‘pregnancy horror’ genre.

A young Romanian woman, Elena, takes a job as a live-in maid for a wealthy Danish couple who have eschewed the trappings of modern life in favour of living in a creepy old house in the woods without electricity or running water.

It soon transpires that the job may involve a little more than simply helping around the house when the couple ask Elena to be a surrogate seed-carrier for them. She reluctantly agrees because $$$, but this being horror the pregnancy doesn’t exactly go smoothly and Elena begins to suspect there might be something a tad demonic about the sprog she’s carrying.

It’s atmospheric and creepy, but probably not the best movie to watch when you’re expecting.
