Cross the basic premise of The Evil Dead with the meta-horror of The Cabin in the Woods and Scream and throw in some particularly nasty zombies for good measure and you’ve pretty much got the gist of Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola’s 2009 comedy-horror gore-fest Dead Snow.

A gaggle of horny young ‘uns head off to a remote mountain cabin for a weekend of snow, skiing and sex but find their plans scuppered after they unwittingly awaken a horde of the aforementioned undead. But these are no ordinary zombies, oh no. They’re Nazi zombies, which are at least three times as bad as your average zombie.

The movie’s tongue may be firmly in cheek throughout but it never lets up on the gore with plenty of other body parts – intestines, arms and brains included – splattered left right and centre. A not quite as good but infinitely gorier sequel with the added bonus of zombie Soviet POWs was released in 2014.
