10 Amazing Plot Twists In Otherwise Awful Movies
2. Argylle - Ellie's Parents
Argylle is an utterly dreadful attempt at a spy thriller from the normally reliable Matthew Vaughn. As if its shoddy script and heaps of cliches weren't bad enough, it's headlined by a completely miscast Bryce Dallas-Howard, and nearly all of the other actors, especially poor Henry Cavill, are wasted.
Still, it's not a total loss, for the mid-film twist is legitimately brilliant when taken on its own terms. The moment where protagonist Ellie (Howard) is waiting for her father, and then it turns out to be a shady suited antagonist (Bryan Cranston) seen in several earlier scenes, is a genuinely kick-ass shock. The film then doubles down on this in the best sort of way by revealing that Ellie's apparent mother (Catherine O'Hara) is in fact also one of the bad guys, and that neither of them are Ellie's real parents. They're both agents in a sinister agency known as the Division.
It's not long before the film is back to being a generic snooze-fest, and the later reveal that Ellie is actually a former spy suffering from amnesia was less effective. Still, this scene does at least give audiences one awesome thing they can take away from an otherwise disappointing viewing experience.
