10 Amazing Revenge Films That Are Really Bleak
3. Death Sentence (2007)
Films that push everyday people into the action tend to make the better story. The reason being, we as an audience subconsciously inject ourselves in the narrative. We question what it would be like if we were the main characters.
Kevin Bacon plays Nick, a grieving father avenging a son who is killed during a gang initiation. Wracked with sorrow, and with the law barely lifting a finger to even try apprehending the killers, Nick wades into a one-man-war against the gang who orchestrated his son's death.
Standard revenge tale right? Well, things take a grim turn in the film's second act when the thugs invade his home and attempt to finish off the rest of Nick's family.
Even in the final moments we aren't really cheering when the gangs meet their maker; after Nick slaughters them all, the chief antagonist gloats that even though they are both about to die, the bad-guys still won because they turned Nick into someone like them.
For a film that wasn't well received, it does send a peculiar message about taking the law into our own hands. Sometimes we become the very thing we set out to destroy.
