10 Amazing Scenes In The Halloween Franchise
1. The Closet - Halloween (1978)
There are any number of moments in John Carpenter's Halloween that could've taken the top spot in this article. But the chosen moment edges everything out ever-so-slightly to become one of the most iconic scenes in horror cinema.
Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode proves herself a likeable and relatable lead throughout the film. However, it is in the final twenty minutes that she truly shines as she races to protect the children in her care, proving that she's willing to lay down her life to protect others. Her smarts keep her alive, as she puts up a more than admirable fight subduing The Shape with a swift knitting needle to the neck. But you just can't kill the Boogeyman... Myers reappears, beginning yet another pulse-pounding cat and mouse sequence and Laurie makes what seems to be her first mistake and opts to hide in a flimsy closet.
Whether it's in a documentary, a television ad or a YouTube video when someone wishes to represent Halloween in a single scene, they always choose the closet. Curtis' fear level escalates so believably and Michael's sheer brutality and determination as he punches through the wood is horrifying. It really seems there is no escape for this character we've come to love, but Laurie makes use of her surroundings and blinds The Shape with a hanger, making it easy to see why she became the blueprint for the typical horror movie "final girl." We cheer as she seemingly puts Michael down for good with a knife to the chest as the truly tense scene crescendos. There was no question that this masterclass in horror tension would be the number one choice: it is the ultimate good vs. evil battle.
