10 Amazing Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Stop Sleeping On

6. Predestination

This mind-bending riddle of a film was directed by The Spierig Brothers and released in 2014. Starring Ethan Hawke as a time travelling agent sent to 1975 to stop a major New York bombing, Predestination features enough twists and shocks to make it a must watch for any and all sci-fi fans.

During his mission, temporal agent John (Ethan Hawke) comes across a man (Sarah Snook) who proves to be much more than meets the eye - and perhaps a vital part of his impending quest.

The true joy of Predestination, though, outside of the phenomenal performances of Hawke, Snook and the underrated Noah Taylor, is its ability to find a new and constantly compelling angle from which to tackle the time travel theme.

Based on the short story "All You Zombies" by Robert Heinlein, the film takes the idea of the Predestination Paradox - the idea that a time traveller cannot change the past or the future and that time travel is just a series of looped events pre-destined to occur - and turns it into a twisting, beautifully executed thriller.

With its staggering ideas about fate and history, Predestination is a film in dire need of more viewers, and it will stay with you long after the climax is reached.
