3. The Discovery
Released in 2017, The Discovery is a Netflix Original film with a strong focus on complicated themes such as morality, mortality and obsession. A slow but endlessly intriguing drama, it stars Jason Segel, Rooney Mara and Robert Redford and handles its dark subject matter with maturity and sincerity.
After Thomas Harbor (Redford) finds scientific proof of an afterlife, the world sees a sudden rise in suicides. Two years after the titular discovery, Harbor's son Will (Segel) journeys to his father's mansion, where he is conducting a series of dangerous and intrusive experiments in hopes of finding out more about what happens to you after you die. There, Will also meets Isla (Mara), and the two form a strong bond.
The film doesn't shy away from the themes of death, depression and the fine line between right and wrong, the whole picture anchored by subtle and powerful performances from Segel, Mara and Redford. But within the large scale sci-fi plot, The Discovery also hosts a beautiful and moving love story between its two leads, and doesn't get too caught up in the big picture, instead focusing on a series of relationships effected and created by a world-changing event.
