10 Amazing Supporting Characters You Wish Movies Were Centred On
Can we all agree Bryan Cranston should have lasted longer in Godzilla?
Though every character in every movie has their own role to play, it's hard to argue that above all else the main protagonist is the most important. They are the ones that drive the story, they typically have more screen time than anyone else, and if the audience doesn't connect with or care about them, the entire thing is facing an uphill battle from the start.
However, there are plenty of times where the hero leaves a little to be desired. Even if there is nothing particularly wrong with their arc or their performance, they can still be overshadowed by one of their supporting players.
Look at the likes of Jack Sparrow and Hannibal Lecter. In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and The Silence of the Lambs respectively, these two played supporting roles, but stole the show so much that the next outings saw them promoted to lead characters.
Similarly, these 10 supporting players were so compelling that they deserved the same treatment, whether in a sequel situation, or even in the same movie. Even though some of these films have strong enough protagonists, it's hard to argue that there were others who could have done more with the spotlight.
10. Cliff Booth - Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood
With Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood boasts star power the likes of which few others can. In spite of Robbie putting in an outstanding performance with limited screen time, and an Oscar-nominated outing from DiCaprio, Brad Pitt was the best thing about this film.
It was DiCaprio's Rick Dalton who was the story's lead character, and it was in his arc more than anywhere else that Tarantino's homage to Hollywood existed, however in terms of importance to the overall story surrounding the Charles Manson murders, Pitt's Cliff Booth was far more integral.
In his Academy Award-winning role, Pitt played one of the coolest on-screen characters ever. He was a badass, he was incredibly funny, and showcased every last ounce of his talents.
It was reported that Tarantino's long awaited tenth outing, The Movie Critic, would have continued on from Once Upon a Time, and would even have brought back Pitt as Cliff Booth. However, with the recent news that this entire project has been scrapped, audiences may not get to see the character step into a completely deserved lead role. Yes, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood is a fantastic movie, but it would have arguably been better with Pitt in the lead.
