Apparently Cameron briefly spent some time on board an unmade fifth Alien film, which ended up getting stuck on the backburner when Alien Vs Predator finally made it into production. "To me, that was Frankenstein Meets Werewolf. It was Universal just taking their assets and starting to play them off against each other...Milking it," he said, believing it would kill of the franchise's credibility. Which he was right about, to a degree. Arguably it was the sequel, or possibly even Prometheus, that was the real nail in the coffin. Anyway, with Cameron off the project Alien 5 officially died a death, but not before Joss Whedon had penned a script presumably to atone for the sins dealt in his writing of Alien: Resurrection. In fact one of Whedon's alternate endings to Resurrection had Ripley and Call crash-landing on Earth, and it's there he hoped to set a fifth Alien film. Unfortunately Sigourney Weaver was not interested in this setting, and sought to return the story to the planet from the first film. Which made Alien Vs Predator the first earth-bound entry in the series...
