2011's Winnie the Pooh may not have been particularly ambitious, what with its 63-minute runtime and relatively relaxed approach to story, but that didn't stop it being one of the most charming animated films of the last few years, and a reminder that an animation doesn't require incessant pop-culture references or need to assault the senses in order to succeed. It was quite, gentle, whimsical and visually gorgeous: everything we would expect from a Winnie the Pooh film. That said, due to the relatively niche nature of a film like this these days, it opened on limited release in many territories, and as such made $33 million at the box office against a $30 million budget, just barely breaking even, and pretty much nullifying any hope of a sequel. We'll probably have to stick with books and TV specials from now on...
