10 Announced Movies That Mysteriously Disappeared

1. My Brother, Borat

Borat may have received an official sequel in October 2020, but did you know that an unofficial sequel to the smash-hit comedy was in the works over a decade ago?

Upset with the way that Kazakh people were portrayed in Sacha Baron Cohen's uproarious satire, filmmaker Erkin Rakishev set out to make a movie that displayed his country in a more positive light.

To that end, he came up with My Brother, Borat, which would follow an American man who decides to visit Kazakhstan after watching the original Borat. Upon arrival, he attempts to seek out Borat's run-down village from the movie, but is surprised when he discovers a modern, well-developed city instead.

For obvious reasons, My Brother, Borat received a ton of press at the time of its announcement, and we even got a behind-the-scenes look at Rakishev shooting the movie (see the video below). That would seem to indicate things were moving along quite nicely, and yet, we've heard nary a whisper about the project since 2010.

If we were to speculate? It's possible that Rakishev ran into some legal trouble with Fox. That studio distributed Borat in 2006, and would almost certainly be able to cause some problems for an "unofficial sequel" like this.

Whatever the case, My Brother, Borat never saw the light of day.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
