10 Annoying Flaws That Stop Great Directors Being Perfect
8. M. Night Shyamalan - Obligated To Put Twists In His Films
Ever since the infamous twist at the end of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan has been heralded as the man who delivers on "gotcha!" movie endings. Expecting the unexpected has become such a staple of his films, that for him to not turn the tables at the end is the twist itself.
Let's be clear, Shyamalan is great filmmaker. Through careful camera positioning, and how he builds up suspense in his pacing, are some of his best qualities. When combined with the interesting plots he does conceive of, Shyamalan should hit home runs each time. The problem is, Shyamalan is addicted to subverting expectations, and the end result doesn't always land on the dismount.
If films like The Last Airbender and After Earth have proved anything, it's that Shyamalan works at his best with a small budget and a narrow concept. The Visit, Split, Unbreakable and Signs were all small films that highlighted how he can create tension with very little in the room.
Perhaps Shyamalan needs a writing partner, or at the very least a trustworthy individual to provide a second opinion on his narrative choices? If he had one of them in the room a year ago, Glass would have been a brilliant end to the anti-Superhero trilogy we didn't know we wanted.
