10 Annoying Flaws That Stop Great Directors Being Perfect

7. Judd Apatow - Too Much Improv

Judd Apatow has cut a fine wedge in the movie industry as a figure who can harness excellent rising talent, and bring out their best qualities for the world to see. With an eye for talent and an ear for great comedy, you can pretty much rely on Apatow to find the right actor for the right role. But there is a problem...

For years, critics noted how poorly Apatow wrote female, homosexual or POC characters in his movies, and thankfully he has gotten better at it over the years. The one thing he still can't seem to get over is the ability to yell "cut!" when the scene is complete.

With a loose script, and an arsenal of Saturday Night Live comics in his films, the riffing never ends and if you have a spare few hours, have a look at the uncut versions or deleted scenes of his films.

The scenes go on for much longer than they need to, with repeated variations of the same joke spewing out the actors' mouths - yes! it may be more of an issue with the actors, but some of this stuff makes it into the theatrical cuts. The finished product is a joke that dies midway, and audiences start wondering how much time is left in the movie.

Don't believe me? Watch Knocked Up again and see how long it is before you're screaming at the film to just end a scene and move on with the story.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
