Films like Drive, The Neon Demon and Only God Forgives are an acquired taste in cinema - and you can be forgiven for not being drawn into the subtle themes of the movies. And while the director, Nicolas Winding Refn might be more known these days for the excessive violence in his projects, there is something more pressing in his work that is unbearable to sit through.

The Amazon series Too Old To Die Young is what happens when Winding Refn is unleashed, and let loose on a ten episode miniseries that is all his machinations put together. It might be one of the most underrated series to binge on any streaming service, and yet one of the reasons why it can be hard to watch is because of how the pacing works.

Much like his movies, there are scenes within the series where Winding Refn has characters pause for almost five seconds before responding to each other. And while Winding Refn is clearly a director who insists on all of a viewer's attention, it can be almost unbearable to watch when characters blankly stare at each other and whisper one-word answers back and forth.

Winding Refn is amazing at creating suspense and bringing the unexpected, but if he could just up his tempo a little bit, his work could feel like it flows much better when you watch it.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
