10 Annoying Flaws That Stop Great Directors Being Perfect
3. Quentin Tarantino - The Feet Obsession Is Distracting
Anyone who has read a couple of forums, or just watched enough movies, knows that Quentin Tarantino has a thing with feet.
Whether his characters are discussing them, he's tracking a character's movements, or if in fact they are integral to the plot, a person's (often a woman's) foot has become like an Easter Egg in his films.
Fans have to assume that Tarantino knows this fact about him, and he's leaning into it as a means to stamp a signature into his films. But the problem is, because the awareness is so well known, every time a character props their feet up, the subconscious message pulls focus away from the film.
All of a sudden, investment in the characters is knocked off-kilter because the meta aspect of Tarantino's flair has been discovered. Like Alfred Hitchock's cameos in his own films, it becomes something audiences should look out for.
I know it's a strange gripe to have, but one of the very tense moments in Inglorious Basterds, or the awesome character development scenes in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood... are flattened slightly by the fact that Margaret Qualley, Margot Robbie or Diane Kruger are enacting one of Tarantino's calling cards.
