10 Annoying Tropes Marvel Needs To Abandon To Save Phase 3

4. Minor Character Deaths

The death (in The Avengers) and subsequent resurrection (in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.) of Agent Coulson greatly devalued the significance of death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the majority of fans are currently spending their time wondering when Quicksilver will make his miraculous return from the dead. There's just no threat to it any more - Nick Fury "died" and came back in the space of an hour, and chances are that none of the big heroes will bite the bullet any time soon. Depending on how closely Captain America: Civil War sticks to the comics though, that could change next year for pool old Steve Rogers. It's the minor characters who are the problem though. Marvel don't really do "dark", but they're not afraid to kill off a minor character when they feel the need to up the stakes. Among the casualties are Agent Sitwell and Thor's mother, while the studio clearly flirted with the idea of taking out Happy Hogan in Iron Man 3. The problem is that these deaths don't really have any sort of significant impact, and Marvel should think about choosing more wisely moving forwards into Phase 3 if they hope to keep the attention of fans. Killing off these minor characters also feels like something of a waste, especially when there are plenty of other stories which could be told with them. Thor's mother Freyja is a perfect example of this, especially as she's recently become Asgard's All-Mother in the comic books, a role which would have been very interesting to see her take on in the MCU.
